Migrating Users from Google Fit SDK to Health Connect

Overview

By end of June 2025, Health Connect will replace Google Fit as the main app for sharing data between Android health apps. This guide will help you understand what this change involves, why it's important, and how to move your users’ data smoothly.

What is Health Connect, and How is it Different from Google Fit?

Health Connect is Google's new tool for sharing health data between apps, replacing Google Fit by mid-2025. Unlike Google Fit, which stores data in the cloud, Health Connect keeps it on the user’s phone, encrypted for security. It also lets users manage all their app connections in one place. Think “Apple Health for Android”...but don’t tell Google we said that.

Key Differences

  • Local Storage: Data stays on the phone, not in the cloud. It's encrypted for safety.
  • Central Management: Users can control all app data connections in one view.
  • Limited Sharing: Newly connected apps can only access 30 days of past data.
  • Dashboard Access: Users can check which apps have recently accessed their data. Your app cannot see this information, though.

Timeline for Migration

  • As of end of 2024: Google Fit API has been deprecated.
  • June 30, 2025: Health Connect takes over and the Google Fit API is sunset.
Between these two periods of time, your users will need to enable Health Connect data syncing for your app. And you will need to ensure that you are successfully receiving their Google Fit data through the Health Connect Inform integration.

Guide your users on how to start moving their data soon to avoid issues.

How to Move from Google Fit to Health Connect

1. Prepare

  • Notify Users: Tell your users about the change and its benefits.
  • Update Guides: Make sure your instructions are up to date with Health Connect.

2. Set Up Health Connect

  • Download Health Connect: Have users download it from Google Play if they are on Android 13 or lower. Android 14+ users can enable Health Connect and view their Health Connect settings via the phone Settings.
  • Enable Permissions: Users should allow necessary permissions for your app and Google Fit in Health Connect. Users must share Google Fit data with Health Connect and then grant you permission to view their Health Connect data.

3. Move Google Fit Data

  • Sync Data: Help users sync existing Google Fit data with Health Connect. When they connect Google Fit with Health Connect, their Google Fit data will automatically start syncing to Health Connect and will appear in the Health Connect dashboard.
    • Steps To Enable the Google Fit -> Health Connect Sync:
      1. Open Google Fit.
      2. Go to Profile → Settings → Health Connect Settings.
      3. Turn on “Sync Fit with Health Connect.”

4. Finalize User Transition

  • Start Health Connect Syncs: Users must enable Health Connect data syncs from your app’s settings. They will be prompted with a system dialog to confirm access to the permissions that you request. They must allow your app permission to read their Health Connect data.
  • Stop Google Fit Syncs: After data is moved, instruct users to stop syncing directly from Google Fit. You can ask them to disable the Google Fit integration in your app. Or you can disconnect from Google Fit on their behalf to stop syncs from Google Fit and prevent duplicates from being reported by both Health Connect and Google Fit.

Key Points to Remember

  • Getting Started: Make sure to update your app to the Inform SDK in order to take advantage of the Health Connect integration.
  • Transition: You can use both Google Fit and Health Connect modules of the Validic Mobile SDK, if you choose to, in order to ease the transition for your users, but watch for duplicate data.
  • User Experience: Create easy interfaces and clear instructions for users to navigate out to Google Fit and Health Connect and enable data syncs.

Conclusion

Switching to Health Connect is important for better data security and management. Your users must complete the migration by June 30, 2025.

By following these steps and guidelines, you can make the transition smooth for yourself and your users, keeping up with changes in digital health.
